Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)

We understand that FND can be like experiencing a frazzled nervous system, that needs care and support to return to a more regulated state.

Intersection of Psychiatry & Neurology

We understand that FND ‘sits’ within the intersection of psychiatry and neurology. It is very much a neurological condition, however it can develop as a result of psychological experience and symptoms can be influenced by stress and other emotions.

Psychology can help with:

  • Providing information about FND

  • Processing any grief around the loss of capacity and aspects of life that you may be missing out on

  • Developing mindfulness around the ability to choose how to respond to your circumstances

  • Maintenance and building of foundation aspects of wellbeing such as sleep, diet and exercise (within capacity)

  • Recognition of triggers and development of strategies to reduce triggers (where possible)

  • Maintenance and building of regulation strategies to calm the nervous system and develop a wider ‘window of tolerance’

  • Developing the skill of pacing activities

  • Developing plans to effectively manage FND symptoms when they occur (reducing any ‘double-struggling’) and recovery from flare-ups

  • Building acceptance of the condition and it’s variable nature

  • Developing flexibility in working around capacity and adjusting long-term goals

  • Supporting connection with others who experience FND for peer support

  • Liaising with close others about your support needs

  • Accessing any government/ community supports available

Working Holistically

We are able to work collaboratively with any other therapists that you may be working with, such as a physiotherapist or OT (Occupational Therapist). This helps us provide holistic support to achieve your goals.
